BFG Tournament

The night before the Battle starts on the ground the fleets have to seize control of the space above. Friday, February 27th the Kalm Before the Waaagh will host a three round BFG tournament from 6 p.m. until midnight in the conference room of the Comfort Suites Inn. (i.e. the hotel where we are staying.) Fleets will consist of 1000 points each round will be two hours in duration.

So blow the dust off that BFG fleet and come join in! And if you don’t know how to play BFG but have been interested at least watch. We cannot think of a better way to start off a great weekend of nerding than with a little BFG!

And if you don’t know anything about BFG its pretty much like this.

Dale Oser's Krewe of Bachus

In the spirt of the Kalm Before the Waaagh Dale Oser of Mandeville, LA is painting a spacemarine army whose primarch is Bachus, the greek god of wine and celebration. We are playing 40K in a bar after all.

Straight from the bars on Bourbon Street and Mardi Gras comes the Krewe of Bachus and the Grapes of Wrath. Due to the tremendous amounts of wine ingested and stains on the armor, the army has chosen purple as their main color. Painted Purple, Gold and Green in the official colors of Mardi Gras, the space marines will take on all comers. The only thing missing is the bare chested wenches that can be seen from the floats…ehhhh, rhinos and razorbacks…more wine please.

Dale’s marines have seen the elephant and, in New Orleans style, cooked and ate it. The Krewe of Bachus is looking forward to battle on the field of felt. When you see Dale at the Kalm make sure to introduce yourself to him as only a guy who would be fun to play would theme an army like this.

The Kalm Before the Waaagh 2009

My goal is for The Kalm Before the Waaagh to be the best small tournament in the nation!

Last year the Kalm Before the Waaagh was the surprise event of the year for those that attended. The Kalm is a different event in many ways. It is a small tournament of less than 50 and it will always be so. The Kalm Before the Waaagh is designed to be light hearted and is a throw back to the days when 40K was played in a pub amongst friends.

No griping or bitching is allowed. If you are even going to think about cheating or “bending the rules” please do not show up. If you cannot relax and drink a few, proverbial, beers while playing the game we love or if you confuse playing a nerd game with something that is actually important, this may not be the event for you.

Where: On February 28th, at “The Jazz Factory”. For those that are not familiar with the establishment this is one of Huntsville’s true hidden treasures. A 1940’s style white table cloth restaurant and jazz bar. For one day we have the entire upstairs martini bar all to our selves. You will love this venue.

When: The tournament will begin at 9:00 a.m. sharp!!!! The tournament will end at 5:20 and we have to be out of there by 6:00 so they can open for regular business. Help breaking down and getting us out of there will be greatly appreciated!

What: 1850 points.

Cash Bar: Darrell “The Bartender” will be prepared to start serving at 9:00 a.m. Darrell is helping to set up and working the entire day for tips. Do not register for this event if you are going to be cheap or stiff him. He is a good guy and is doing us a favor opening and helping us.

Cost: $30. Yes, you get this amazingly great deal for a mere $30.

Lunch: A great BBQ lunch, prepared by BBQ cook off competition winner Jim Sejia, will be provided! His food is GREAT! We are really lucky he agreed to cook for us!

Hotel: Those needing a place to stay on Friday and / or Saturday night may stay at the Comfort Suites Inn. Normally, rooms go for approximately $110 per night but these rooms will be available to people who pre-registed $60 per night! Yes, you get not just a room but a suite for $60! To reserve a room call 256-562-2400 and say you are with the “George Flowers party”. This will get you the freaky low discount rate! And the hotel is great! Check out the attached PDF on our hotel for information.

Limousine: Limo service will be available for guests who stay at the Comfort Suites Inn to take you to and from the Jazz Factory for the tournament. Yes, that’s right you will get transported to your tournament in a Limo. This is so everyone is free to enjoy their selves for the day and no one will have to drive!

Age: No kids allowed. Sorry but because this tournament is in a bar you must be 21 to participate.

Level of Competition: People are invited and allowed to play in this event because they are fun to play with. Not because they are necessarily top notch players. There will be some very solid players there and some people will suck at the game. Join this event for camaraderie not to prove you are the king of the nerd hill.

Wife and Family: For those from out of town we are arranging something special for the wife and kids to do. I have acquired a limited number of tickets for several things which will keep everyone busy while dad or boyfriend entertains his inner nerd. Special discounts in the Bridgestreet Town Center for those, and their families, who attend The Kalm have been arranged at Dulce, Ketchup, Cantina Loredo for dining as well as special passes for the Monico Movie Theaters. Finally, we have a few free passes for families who want to tour the Space and Rocket Center.

BASIC RULES

• Armies will consist of 1850 points using a standard force organization chart.
• A total of three games will be played.
• Two and one half hours per turn.
• The Warhammer 40k 5th Edition Rules will be used.
• The following is a list of legal army choices for use in The Kalm:

- Codex: Chaos Marines
- Codex: Daemonhunters
- Codex: Daemons
- Codex: Dark Eldar
- Codex: Eldar
- Codex: Imperial Guard
- Codex: Necrons
- Codex: Orks
- Codex: Space Marines
- Codex: Black Templars
- Codex: Blood Angels (from WD 242 & 243)
- Codex: Dark Angels
- Codex: Space Wolves
- Codex: Tau
- Codex: Tyranids
- Codex: Witchhunters

• The following are NOT allowed in The Kalm (This list is simply for rules clarification. If the army is not on the above “armies allowed” list then it is not allowed):
- Rules and Army Lists marked as "Trial" or "Optional"
- Warhammer 40,000 Apocalypse rules
- Any army which does not have a codex
- Any units which are not contained within the armies codex
- Any campaign or expansion codex (for example Eye of Terror or Armegeddon)
- Chapter Approved (Excluding Blood Angels from WD)

• Special and upgrade characters are allowed, assuming that they are playable at 1,850 pts.
• What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG). If you wish to use an item, it must be represented on the figure.
• You must provide access to your own rules (which include the actual Codex used for your army), dice, templates, pen/pencil, calculator, or anything else you'll need during the course of regular play.
• 5 Copies of your Army List (1 for the judge, 3 for your opponents, 1 for yourself)
• Give your opponent a copy of your list before the game starts. Its just polite.
• All missions shall be considered "Standard".
• In order to keep the tournament running on schedule, when time is called for a round, all player's must drop the dice and stop playing - no exceptions. Because of this, please be aware of the time left in the round and do not start a turn that EACH player cannot finish.
• If you cheat or have a crappy attitude you will be kicked out without a refund.
SCORING

Battle: There are 20 battle points which can be won for each game.
Paint: Each player will be awarded up to 20 points towards their final score for paint. An average paint score will be 10. A completely unpainted army (which you are welcome to bring if you choose) will be awarded a zero while the army that Michealangelo and DaVinci got together to paint would be worth 20.
Sportsmanship: Each player will be awarded up to 10 points per game by his opponent based on sportsmanship.

Hey, I just wanted to tell you again what a good job you and the guys did. The space was great and the missions and the terrain were fantastic. I got to play a couple of great games and had a blast.

The mini Big Waaaaagh was incredible!!!! 40 players all looking for beer, er, I mean blood. Yes, granted this is the most I have ever been beat on. Yes other than sportsmanship I only scored 5 points, and yes I was awarded Best Sportsman because I was still laughing after only scoring 5 points the whole weekend. This was by far the best tournament ever.
The setting and atmosphere of the Jazz Factory was magnificent. The players and organizers were first rate and worked very hard to make sure every player was having a good time.
Ok, one Guard player tried to pull a couple of things on me but he did teach me the power of over 25 mortars
There was a prize for who ever ran up the highest bar tab. By the end of the 2nd round it was a close call between two drunks. One drunk was craftier than the drunker drunk. The craftier drunk told the bartender to put what ever the drunker drunk orders on his tab there by almost doubling his own tab. IT was the best example of deep striking ever!
Post game dinner was back at the Jazz Factory along with a great Frank Sinatra cover singer. And yes, the ladies looked very nice.

Well, I'm still recovering from the long drive I had to and from the Kalm before the Waaagh tournament. I have to say it was the best tournament of any kind I have ever been to. Everyone I meet was great, and I did not have one argument all day. There were even a few times I forgot to shoot my SAGs because we were laughing and having a great time. The only thing I'm sad about is my Orks fought hard to control the Moonshine quarter, but were unable to control it. Every tournament needs to have this atmosphere. I will post some pictures once I get my camera from my friend. Thanks for the great time.

I want to say thanks to George and Donovan and anyone else who helped put that tournament together. that was the best re-introduction into 40k i could possibly imagine. i am inspired now to get my Blood Angels in fighting condition for The Big Waaagh

You guys did a great job. We met with most of our group on Sunday and told them that it was a great experience. I would think next year we will be able to bring 8-10 people.
We had no complaints.
